All travel to Mexico City discontinued for the time being; free rebookings for entire Mexico program
TUI, Germany’s leading tour operator, has decided to discontinue all travel to Mexico City up to and including May 4th as a response to the outbreak of the swine flu in Mexico. The Mexican metropolis will no longer be included in round tours in the following weeks, either. This regulation holds for all tour operators under the German TUI group who offer trips to Mexico in their catalogs. Besides TUI itself, this includes 1-2-Fly, Airtours, Berge & Meer, Gebeco and L tur.
Out of approximately 1,000 German TUI clients presently in Mexico, only four are staying in the affected area. The most relevant region by far for German vacationers is the holiday destination of Playa del Carmen on the peninsula of Yucatan, 1,200 km to the east. According to present state of knowledge, no one has contracted the swine flu in this area as of yet. Although this travel destination has been spared by the plague so far, TUI is offering all clients headed for Mexico the opportunity to rebook their trips at no additional cost. This regulation, too, holds for all clients of tour operators under the German TUI group scheduled for departure up to and including May 4.
TUI’s crisis squad is in permanent contact with the Department for Foreign Affairs and the local authorities in Mexico and is closely observing the developments. All travelers in Mexico are being informed on the present situation and provided with behavioral guidelines in order to avoid infection. The same holds true for all clients scheduled to begin their journey over the next days. Requests for returning ahead of schedule will be complied with as far as possible. However, no such desires have been voiced by travelers as of yet.
TUI recommends all clients to contact their travel agencies or to directly consult the dedicated telephone hotline at 0511-5678000.
