The executive board and members of management of Germany’s second-largest air carrier, Air Berlin, waived 50 percent of the bonuses they were entitled to for the business year of 2008. In doing so, they contributed a total of 2 million euros to “Jump”, a package of measures initiated in Spring, 2008. This means that the management is forgoing 10 percent, and the executive board 25 percent of their annual wages.

The executive board confirms that the projections of positive operational results for the completed business year 2008 are expected to be met, despite increased fuel costs in the previous year and a heavily slowed economy.

In late November, the airline’s package of measures had already shown successful, allowing for an increase in operational results by 57 percent as compared to the reference period in the previous year. At the time, CEO Joachim Hunold had pointed out that the results of the third quarter had been „the best quarterly result in the history of our company“.

Air Berlin will provide news on the annual results of 2008 on March 30 in Berlin.

Air Berlin is the second-largest air carrier in Germany. Last year, the company transported a total of 28.6 million passengers worldwide and employed more than 8,000 people. In 2008, alone, Air Berlin was awarded more than ten times for service and quality. With an average age of 4.6 years, Air Berlin’s fleet is one of the youngest in Europe. Their modern jets consume less kerosene, allowing for a lasting reduction in pollutant emissions in air transportation.
