Capella Hotels and Resorts, an organization that is currently operating nine properties, is laying plans for rapid growth. Capella is based in Singapore, and its executive leadership, including CEO Nicholas Clayton, has said that the company is moving to open three hotels, all of which will make their debuts within the next eight months. Looking even further down the line, Capella Hotels and Resorts then has a total of 10 properties under development and, perhaps most notably, a third brand on its way, according to statements made by Clayton.
Capella is Defined by Rapid Growth
Indeed, some industry experts say that this sort of rapid growth has long been a defining feature for Capella Hotels and Resorts.
Founded in 2002 by hospitality industry veteran Horst Schulze, who ran the famous Ritz-Carlton for many years, the company has quickly risen. Clayton took over as its CEO in 2016 and he has described Schulze as a mentor. He has also said that the Asia Pacific market is a “ripe market” for tourism, suggesting that it is possibly the most viable market for the industry on the planet.

Schulze, for his part, was participating in a joint venture with the Singapore-based Kwee family going back more than a decade before he sold the global rights to the Capella brand to them last year. Clayton has said that the Kwee family, which has been in the business of developing real estate for 60 years, plans to continue to have equity in select opportunities branded and managed by the group.

Capella’s Evolution
To put it in the simplest of terms, the way that Capella Hotels and Resorts has developed is quite typical of hotel groups that start out with ownership and move to management, Clayton has said. The difference being here that this ownership is well-known for holding its assets over the longer term.

Schulze for now is currently still the chairman emeritus of Capella and an “integral part” of the company, helping with staff motivation, pre-opening countdowns and business development, said Clayton. Clayton added that Schulze’s original concept for Capella is still intact, and a lot of market research went into developing a clientele that buys suites, club floor rooms and other specialty inventory at luxury hotels.

“A brand to serve that market was missing,” he said. “They don’t want to stand in line, don’t want to feel like they’re being processed; they want a curated experience.”

The Asia Pacific Market
In terms of the Asia Pacific Market that factors so heavily into Capella’s plans, the future is indeed a rosy and robust one.

In fact, information from the TOPHOTELCONSTRUCTION database shows that the region currently has 1,980 projects in its pipeline, which upon completion will yield as many as 480,141 rooms. This, of course, provides much opportunity for interested parties in the hospitality industry, such as Capella.

Let’s take a look at a few other projects currently underway in the Asia/Pacific region:
