If successful, CheapTickets will offer anesthesia flights as an additional service CheapTickets.de is testing possibilities of “Flying under anesthesia”
CheapTickets.de will perform a special test on June 30th: “Flying under anesthesia”. Travellers can sign up voluntarily for this via the website CheapTickets.de. Thirty people will be selected and placed prior to takeoff in a light sleep (light anesthetic). This test by CheapTickets will examine whether anesthesia can be a means for people to be more relaxed and rested when they arrive at their destination. Being sedated may help fight fatigue, jet lag, annoying fellow passengers, being forced to sit for a long period of time, turbulences or simply against the fear of flying. The first results are expected to be released in July or August.
According to Matthias Kintrup, co-developer of the scheme, the anesthesia will be used for long haul flights. “Tests show that for a lot of people, there are many hurdles to overcome in turns of going on a long haul flight. Factors such as tiredness, jet lag and irritating passengers play a big role in people deciding not to go on a long haul flight. Being under a light sedation will help you to arrive relaxed and rested at the place of destination and make the journey as stress free as possible”.

Offering a “Flight under anesthesia” option fits in with the additional services CheapTickets offers such as hotel bookings, transfers, car hire and insurance. It also corresponds to demands of current travellers. Market research conducted by CheapTickets showed that crying and screaming children was the biggest annoyance for 44% of passengers. For children with bundles of energy or children with a fear of flying, a light anesthesia could potentially be a solution in the future. For now, however, the test is intended only for adults. Of course, all tests are carried out under medical supervision. A licensed anaesthetist leads the anesthesia operations and continuously monitors developments during the flight”.

Hardly any side effects
The first test flight will take place on June 30th 2017. Interested travellers have until April 30th to register for the “Flight under anesthesia” scheme. The thirty people selected for the test flight will receive a medical examination shortly before and after landing and must also fill out a questionnaire. A few days after arriving at the destination, the passengers will be examined again and finally, a week after returning to the UK.
Matthias Kintrup: “This new form of anesthesia is special because there are very few side effects, if any. For example, nausea is highly unlikely to occur. This anesthesia is specifically designed to provide a relaxed feeling. We are very curious about the results. If the volunteers are also happy after the experiment, and there are no complications, then it’s definitely worth considering offering the “Flights under anesthesia” option in the near future on all intercontinental flights. This will obviously all be under medical supervision and strict conditions. It would be amazing to help our customers arrive completely rested at the destination due to the anesthesia”.
