King Felipe VI gives his Spanish Kingdom a new image– which affects the tourism positively. The capital Madrid with its royal architecture underwent a tourism boom in the past year. Just in the first eight month of 2014 the number of visitors increased by 12 percent to five million. More top hotels are in the pipeline. According to TOPHOTELPROJECTS, the worldwide leading provider for global b2b hotel data, currently nine first class and luxury hotels with 2,100 rooms are under construction and planned.

The takeover of the traditional Hotel Ritz by Mandarin Oriental was spectacular. The Asian luxury hotel group bought the property, originally build in 1910, together with the Saudi Arabian investment group Olayan for 130 million Euros. Another 90 million Euros – 1,3 million Euros per room – will be invested for the lavish renovation. In 2017 the hotel will re-open as Mandarin Oriental Hotel Madrid.

Also Four Seasons relies on the Iberian capital and invests enormously into a building complex consisting of seven heritage protected city palaces in prime location. The 500 million euro project will also feature a shopping center as well as a huge parking garage. The 215 room luxury hotel is scheduled to open early 2017.

Another outstanding hotel project ensures amazement: the Chinese real estate group Wanda plans to transform the historical Palace Edificio Espana, among others, into a luxury hotel with 100 rooms and suits. The operator and the opening date are so far unknown.

Residents and visitors more and more use the city-owned e-bikes, which are available at more than 120 rental stations around the city. The number of e-bikes – currently 1,580 – is about to double. Furthermore the authority plan to encourage car sharing and suchlike with special parking rights.
