airberlin celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin wall at the weekend of November 9, 2014 up in the air and also on the ground. On Saturday evening, the airberlin guests of the three round trips enjoyed an exceptional view of the LICHTGRENZE, made up of 8,000 luminous balloons, and the former route of the border. Captain Michael Thiess and his crew operated the round trips departing from Berlin-Tegel with a Bombardier Dash Q 400 in a flying altitude of approximately 1,000 metres over Berlin’s city center. Marc and Christopher Bauder, the designers of the 15-kilometre-long ‘illuminated border’ stretching from Bornholmer Strasse to the Oberbaum Bridge, joined the round trip as well.

On Sunday, airberlin celebrated the Fall of the Berlin wall together with the famous artist Thierry Noir who designed sections of the East Side Gallery in 1990, nowadays considered protected monuments, as well as with balloon patrons from all over the world. In keeping with the airline’s anniversary, the 35 balloon patrons were chosen via its social media channels worldwide, on its website, via international media and among airberlin staff members. During the evening of 9 November, all balloon patrons were present at the East Side Gallery to release their helium-filled balloon from its mooring and, thus, to gradually give wings to the LICHTGRENZE, the ‘illumated border’.
