In Shanghai China Rendez-vous is organizing the second Bund Classic Concours d’Elegance, a tribute to the elegant world of classic cars, to be held at the iconic Villa at No. 1 Waitanyuan from 17th to 19th October, 2014. The Best of Show award has become one of the most coveted prizes and the organizers have invited key figures of the automobile industry as well as very influential personalities of the region to put together a Concours that already ranks amongst the best in Asia. Sandra Button is coming back as the Chief Judge of an outstanding panel.
As Chairman of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance since 2002 and as its Executive Director for decades prior, Sandra Button has helped to inspire and guide the growth of the collector car hobby into a truly global celebration of the automobile. She is a very active participant and often officiates at Concours from the Middle East to Europe and South America. She and her husband, Martin Button, have acquired and adore an eclectic collection of automobiles, and they regularly participate in driving events such as the 1000 Millas Sport Argentina, the Copperstate 1000 and the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. Sandra is a member of the Royal Automobile Club, the Classic Car Club of America, the Motor Press Guild and the Society of Automotive Historians.
Liu Tao is the Deputy Curator of the Shanghai Auto Museum, the first dedicated auto museum in China. He and his team made Shanghai’s first professional museum a place that combines history, profiles, technology and originality of automobiles. It interprets Shanghai’s tolerant spirit from a neutral perspective and this is why Liu Tao is in the best position to evaluate and support the growth of the classic car community in China.
Christian Philippsen is Louis Vuitton’s ambassador to the world of automobile aficionados. He is also a consultant to various companies, mainly in the field of automotive design and events organization. He has chaired the Louis Vuitton Classic Awards and Michelin’s Challenge Bibendum Design Awards, and is regularly invited to judge at Concours including Amelia Island, Cavallino Classic, Concours d’Elegance of America, Japan Concours d’Elegance, Kuwait Concours d’Elegance, Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, Schloss Bensberg Classics, to name just a few.
Born in France and educated at City University, London, Alain Li is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and the regional chief executive, Asia Pacific of luxury goods powerhouse Richemont. Alain has been collecting vintage cars for nearly three decades.
Adolfo Orsi is the grandson of Adolfo and son of Omar Orsi who held the reins of Maserati between 1937 and 1969. Since 1987 he dedicated himself full-time to his passion for automobile history, in particular that regarding Italian sports car manufacturers. He is President of Historica Selecta, a company which advises manufacturers, museums and private collectors and publishes the Classic Car Auction Yearbook, the most authoritative annual in the auction field. Since 1997 he has been a judge at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Throughout the years he has also judged at Cavallino, Amelia Island, Uniques and Villa d’Este.
James Knight is Group Motoring Director of Bonhams’ Motoring department and has overall responsibility for specialist collectors’ motor cars, motorcycles and automobilia auctions held throughout the world-wide Bonhams Group. He is also an Executive Board Director of the Bonhams Group. James is an acknowledged expert having specialized in the subject since 1984. He has worked on, and coordinated, record-breaking sales from the late 1980s to the present day, and has personally handled prestigious collections and important motor cars. Notable motor cars he has handled include the 1904 Rolls-Royce 10hp Two-Seater, which sold for £3,521,500 (US$7,242,916 ) and the 1955 Jaguar D-Type, which fetched £2,201,500 (US$4,355,712). James is accomplished auctioneer and was nominated ‘Auctioneer of the Year’ for the British Antiques and Collectors Association.
Carl Yuen has judged on the local Classic Car Club of Hong Kong (CCCHK) Concours panel as well as Ferrari and MG (amongst other marques) Concours d’Elegance in Hong Kong for many years. He is currently the Chairman of the CCCHK, and speaks on the Club’s behalf on TV and Radio. Carl races in the Asia Classic Challenge in an old Porsche and also dabbles in DIY classic car maintenance. He has written and test-driven for many local English-language publications and has travelled the world driving some of the best Classic (and modern) cars. When he’s not behind the wheel, he is a barrister specializing in Motor Traffic related cases.
Although Derek Drummond Bonzom is French, he was born in Scotland and, during his childhood, developed a passion for all mechanically propelled machines. He has mechanically restored all the cars in his workshop and enjoys driving a 1903″ Brighton runner” in Europe, South America or even…in China (2011). He joined FIVA, the International Federation for Historic Vehicles, and, as Chairman of the Technical Commission, developed the use of the FIVA ID card, almost worldwide, aiming to encourage authenticity.
Ma Qing Hua is a Chinese racing driver who has competed in such series as Italian Formula 3000 in 2005 and the British Formula Three Championship. He also raced for A1 Team China at the China round of the 2005–06 A1 Grand Prix season. He made history as the first Chinese-born driver to drive a Formula One car at an FIA-sanctioned event, a milestone described as “heralding an important step for Chinese motorsport”.Ma also became the first Chinese driver to take part in a Grand Prix weekend when he replaced Narain Karthikeyan in the first Friday practice session of the Italian Grand Prix.
Eli Solomon has spent a lifetime in the company of cars, both good and bad. His interests are varied, from running a rare book business specialising in South East Asia, to building an archive of historical material on motoring and motor sport in Asia. His racing exploits include wringing the neck out of his single-seater Brabham and US-built C Sports prototype at historic race events as well as rebuilding old race cars, including a 1960s Group 6 prototype and a 1950s Malayan-built Special. In 2010 he started Rewind Magazine, a quarterly mag-book focusing on Asian motor sport and motor sport heritage. Eli is based in Singapore.
Martin Button is the president of Cosdel International Transportation and has experience in shipping classic automobiles by both air and ocean for many of the world’s best-known collectors, dealers, and auction houses. He and his wife Sandra also attend and often officiate at numerous car shows, rallies and tours each year.
Mark Tippetts has competed in many classic racing events such as the Mille Miglia. He has also attended many Concours d’Elégances, from events in Europe to Pebble Beach in California, and was Christies Classic Car Department’s consultant in Japan under Lord Montagu in the 1980’s. Together with Edward Montagu, they provided all the historic memorabilia and artwork for the National Toyota Motor Museum in Japan. Mark has one of the most complete collections of early Ferrari factory original documents and publications, and a wide collection of publications on Rolls Royce and Bentley. He traveled to Myanmar in 1964 on an overland road trip from the United Kingdom. He moved to Myanmar in 1996 and is now the Group Ambassador of Yoma Strategic Holdings.
Yann Debelle de Montby is committed to looking for inspiration and describes himself as a born collector and a Dreamer. Yann has worked for the past 30 years in the Luxury Industry for Pierre Balmain, Kashyam, LVMH and Richemont Groups. In his role as worldwide Director of Communications and PR for Alfred Dunhill, Yann has been exploring the rich heritage of the brand and contributed to its revival. In April 2009, Yann opens his Manufactory of Dreams – Debelle de Montby Associates, a design agency specialized in Brand Platforms, Interior design and Communication. The studio is based in Shanghai and has an office in Paris。
