On 1st January 2013 Álvaro Middelmann will retire from his position as Senior Vice President Spain & Portugal at airberlin. Middelmann will, however, retain links to airberlin as an advisor to the Board of Directors. Paul Verhagen, who has been Area Manager Spain & Portugal since 12th April 2012, will continue to be responsible for all airberlin’s commercial activity in Spain and Portugal. Pablo Caspers remains in the position of Vice President Sales and Marketing Spain & Portugal.
Paul Gregorowitsch, CCO airberlin: “Under Alvaro Middelmann’s leadership, airberlin has become a successful and prestigious airline in Spain as well. On behalf of airberlin’s management I would like to pay tribute to Mr Middelmann for his outstanding achievements in ensuring the company’s development and thank him for the positive contribution he has made over the past years.”

Since 1993 Álvaro Middelmann has been in charge of the key strategic markets of Spain and Portugal at airberlin and has opened up and expanded the two markets for the airline. He has played an important part in developing Palma de Mallorca into airberlin’s leading hub outside of Germany.

For nine years in succession, the airberlin group has been the carrier with the highest volume of passengers at Son Sant Juan Airport on Majorca, with a total of 7.8 million passengers every year. The airline’s first ever flight took off from Berlin to Palma de Mallorca on 28th April 1979. Since then the airberlin group has steadily increased the number of flights it operates to Majorca and now offers up to 500 direct flights a week to the Balearic Islands during the summer season.
