As one of the Chinese artist affected by Chinese poetry and Chinese painting of landscape, Yang Yongliang, studied traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy. Inspired by the ancestral culture, including the famous Shanshui traditional mountain landscapes, he uses photography and creates from scratch a new world of illusions, a vision between dream and nightmare, both futuristic and secular. Yang Yongliang’s work goes beyond the notion of pastiche. By its delicacy, its texture the artist makes a photographic shanshui. The artist also explores sculpture, installation and video, transforming his digital landscape into real life experiences. And Ma Liang, also known as Maleonn, is a talented Shanghai photographer who has gained a kind of cult following because of his fable like photographs. His images, in color and black and white, are often created with props, actors and a strange mix of hues, colors and theatrical sets.

“Art in Hainan” also offers lectures and seminars about art including “Art and Luxury”, “The art of collecting” and “Corporate sponsorship in the arts”, discussing how art has to be a part of the everyday life whether it is in the urban landscape or as an art collector. Art has a major role to play in the public space as well as our lifestyles.
