The andel’s Hotel Berlin has become the first hotel of Vienna International Hotels & Resorts to receive Green Globe certification, the premier globally recognised seal of quality for sustainable management and operations in the international travel & tourism industry. The label recognises the 4-star hotel’s responsible and proactive contribution to the ecologically and socially sustainable development of the highly competitive Berlin hotel market. The results of the certification procedure speak for themselves: the andel’s Hotel Berlin successfully passed 81 percent of a total of 125 sustainability-related criteria.
The factor of sustainability is becoming an increasingly important one in the hotel industry. The 4-star superior conference hotel andel’s Hotel Berlin identified this need for sustainable performance at an early stage. “The demand for green accommodations, meetings and conferences is rapidly rising. Thanks to the cooperation celebrated under the new Green Globe label, we have established the first practical and revisable criteria to serve our guests, partners and employees as a guideline for making both the hotel and the city of Berlin greener than before,” says Ralph Alsdorf, General Manager of the andel’s Hotel Berlin.
The respectful and economical use of resources has long been a passion for all departments of the andel’s Hotel Berlin. This encompasses the efficient and economic use of energy, water and electronics as well as the implementation of a recycling scheme for paper and waste in the guest rooms and suites, the convention area and the offices. The andel’s Hotel Berlin is also leaving a small carbon footprint and has successfully met the requirements to be designated a green building, achieving top values for its resource efficiency. The use of biodegradable cleaning products, the creative cuisine using regional products and the preferred cooperation with environmentally certified suppliers – all this and more is part of the sustainable day-to-day business of the andel’s Hotel Berlin. The andel’s Hotel Berlin was awarded the certification in part for the exemplary actions taken to increase the well-being of its staff members. This includes continuous sustainability training as well as a monthly “nationality day” in which employees are encouraged to present their home country from a culinary, cultural and historical perspective.
Green Globe’s auditing was developed in 1993 and is conducted every two years. To promote the subject of sustainability and environmental protection, the andel’s Hotel Berlin is also establishing a Green Team to verify and realise creative and trend-setting concepts and measures for hotel guests, business partners and staff members. The principal objective within the next 5 years is to reduce carbon emissions. For example, the andel’s Hotel Berlin is working to increase the use of guest bicycles by some 15 percent per year. The andel’s Hotel erlin is also setting high standards for regular efficiency analysis and controlling while presenting an example for sustainable thinking and action.
