KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will operate its first flight to Miami coming Monday, 21 March. Among the passengers will be DJs and dance fans, as well as a large group of bloggers, tweeters and journalists. This unique extra flight, which will depart a week earlier than originally planned, is the result of a bet KLM made via Twitter in October 2010. This is the first time that KLM has deployed an aircraft in response to a request via Twitter.
Social media are playing an increasingly important role in the travel experience of KLM customers. That is why KLM now offers customers the option of posting service queries and engaging in dialogue via Twitter and Facebook. KLM also regularly announces promotional campaigns and special offers via these channels. The Amsterdam-Miami flight will depart from Amsterdam at 15.10 on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, arriving in Miami at 19.10 local time. The return flight will depart from Miami on the same day at 21.15 local time, arriving in Amsterdam at 12.05 the following day.
