Air Berlin, Germany’s second largest airline, has organised a very special kind of open-air concert in Jerusalem tonight. The title for the event is “Encounters” (“Begegnungen”) and performers include Peter Maffay and his band, the artists Noa, Mira Awad and Tsipi Mashid, as well as “Appassionante”, the three Italian crossover sopranos. However, the concert is not only a meeting place for artists from various countries, but also for young people from Germany, Israel and Palestine. Among them are 100 students from the Pestalozzi secondary school in Bochum.

In front of the town hall in Safra Square, Air Berlin will be welcoming 1,500 invited guests from all spheres of public life, including VIPs such as the guest of honour, H.E. Shimon Peres, President of the State of Israel. Joachim Hunold, CEO Air Berlin: “Air Berlin is very keen to develop the existing friendly relations between Germany and Israel even further. However, we want to deepen “Encounters” for Israelis and Germans not only with our nine weekly nonstop services between those two countries. That is why we are supporting Peter Maffay’s multicultural music project to promote greater tolerance and international understanding. For some time now Air Berlin has been working with the Peter Maffay Foundation and sponsors activity breaks in the countryside for troubled children and adolescents.”

“My band I have been honoured to work with Noa and Tsipi Mashid for many years now, but this is the first time we have had the opportunity to appear together and with Mira Awad in Israel. This means a lot to us. We are looking forward to the event and would like to thank Joachim Hunold and Air Berlin that they have made it possible,” said Peter Maffay.

In summer Air Berlin operates direct flights from Düsseldorf (2 flights per week), Berlin (3 flights per week), Cologne/Bonn (2 flights per week) and Munich (2 flights per week) to Tel Aviv.  There are also feeder flights from various German cities.
