20 new upscale hotels with more than 6,200 rooms for World Exposition 2010

World audience looks at Shanghai – The hotel market of the southern Chinese metropole enlarges with 20 new upscale projects with a total room number of more than 6,200. According to Tophotelprojects.com, eight new first class and luxury hotels with more than 2,500 guest rooms are already open to the public. The largest new hotel in the upcoming World’s Expo city (1 May – 31 October) is the early February inaugurated 682-rooms Gran Mélia Shanghai. A further hotel highlight in Shanghai is the 501-room Marriott Changfeng Park, which is also open since February this year.

“There are another 12 upscale hotel projects with approximately 3,700 rooms in the construction pipeline,” Christian Berke, Head of International Sales of Tophotelprojects.com, reveals. Twelve projects will be opened during World Exhibition EXPO 2010. Largest pending construction project is Starwood’s W Shanghai, Pudong with 400 rooms with a scheduled opening in early September. Another remarkable project is the 362-room Hilton premium branded Conrad Shanghai, set to be opened in July.

“Within the next four years we expect, in addition to the earlier mentioned openings, 14 new upscale hotels with more than 6,400 rooms in Shanghai” Berke said. “Among those projects we observe ambitious undertakings of leading hotel brands such as the Waldorf Astoria, Shangri La, Kempinski, Banyan Tree, InterContinental, Sheraton, Westin, Renaissance and even Accor’s Pullmann.”

The hotel market of Shanghai is shaped by 38 luxury hotels in operation, 48 first class hotels and 219 three star and lower star-rated hotels with a total of 76,000 guest rooms. 32% of all available rooms are luxury classed. Until end of 2010, the number of five star hotel rooms is expected to reach 28,500. For World Expo 2010, about 58 million visitors from abroad are expected. According to this estimations, 400,000 beds are needed per day between May and October.
