Another chapter in the German capital’s success story in the conventions business: From January to June, 2009, Berlin welcomed 3.97 million trade visitors attending 50,850 events. This marks a three percent plus in visitors and a 0.3 percent plus in events compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. These are the findings of a recent statistic on conventions, conducted by Berlin Convention Office (BCO) of Berlin Tourismus Marketing GmbH.

According to these statistics, the share of national meetings and conventions rose by two percent to a total of 81 percent. The number of German attendants, too, rose by two percent (82 percent). A slight decline was noted in international events and visitors (-2 percent each).

Visitors of conventions stay longer
A significant increase was recorded in the number of overnight stays, which totalled 2.2 million in the first half of 2009 – a 4.8 percent plus. The average length of stay rose from 1.6 to 1.7 days.

Heike Mahmoud, Director Conventions, BCO: “Association conventions in Berlin attracted the most visitors in the world in 2008. This conclusion, reached by the most recent ICCA statistics, is now complemented on the national level by the recent conventions statistics. Not only are there more trade visitors from within Germany – they also stay longer. This can be attributed in particular to the capital’s exceptional offers as a convention destination: Six convention centers and halls, the most modern hotel landscape in Europe, 1,500 cultural events a day and a very favorable price-performance ratio – this combination is very well received by both event organizers and visitors.”
