Germany’s second-largest air carrier, Air Berlin, is off to a good start of the new year. In January 2009, the company was able to achieve a two-digit increase in yield per available seat kilometer as compared to the same month in 2008: from 4.06 to 4.99 euro cents (+23 percent). The fleet’s capacity utilization improved by 0.3 percentage points to reach 69.4 percent (2008: 69.1 percent). The capacity was lowered by 4.9 percent, while the number of passengers decreased by only 4.5 percent from 1,781,556 to 1,701,780.
