S. Cheng comes back home to Hong Kong with her latest Rosewood offering and the design is out of this world
Rosewood Hotels & Resorts’ new flagship hotel is something of a homecoming for CEO Sonia Cheng, who grew up in the New World Development close to where the new Rosewood is set today. The hotel is an exercise in sophistication and opulence.
Rosewood Hong Kong is S. Cheng’s biggest challenge to date
As CEO of the Rosewood Hotel Group, Sonia Cheng has seen a lot of the world and had a hand in developing hotels in a number of different markets.
But her latest venture, the Rosewood Hong Kong, is a more significant affair.
Cheng grew up in the Tsim Sha Tsui harbour, a site on the Victoria Harbour where the new Rosewood flagship property is located.
Her father and grandfather were behind the original New World Centre, a high-rise, mixed-use complex on the harbour that was developed in the 1980s.
The Centre was essential to the development of this area of Hong Kong, and so it makes sense that bringing Rosewood back home is a meaningful event for Cheng.

Iconic design for Rosewood’s flagship
Given Rosewood Hotels’ reputation, Cheng’s keen eye for detail and the Hong Kong harbour’s unique setting, it is no surprise that the Rosewood Hong Kong has gone above and beyond when it comes to design.
From the exterior architecture and silhouette of the building to the interior design, this new hotel stuns from every angle.

The new Rosewood HongKong

Spread over 43 floors of a new 65-floor tower, it echoes the design of its sister property in Bangkok, which was designed by the same architectural firm, Kohn Pedersen Fox from New York. The eye-catching skyscraper is executed in a shimmering gold and bronze frame, which makes it stand out on the Victoria Dockside’s skyline.

The interiors were done by New York interiors expert Tony Chi, who collaborated with Sonia Cheng and her father to achieve a unique result that reflects their past while at the same time looking to the future.

Chi was also responsible for the interiors of the Rosewood London and is involved in the transformation of a new Rosewood property in New York.
He worked to the concept of the hotel as a ‘vertical estate’, which was Cheng’s vision, and as such the hotel has been conceived of as a stately home which scales and rambles vertically rather than horizontally.

Taking this as his inspiration, Chi has come up with an interior concept based on dense patterns and textures in statement wallpaper and luxurious fabrics.
Moments of dramatic flair permeate the hotel, such as the sculptural staircase or the curvaceous Italian furniture, perfect for lounging around.
