The Middle Eastern state of Saudi Arabia is gearing up for some serious development in the coming years. We take a look inside the busy project pipeline for Saudi Arabia over the next few years. Saudi Arabia is perhaps not as associated with tourism as its neighbours Dubai or Qatar, but tourism in the area has been increasing in recent years. Previously, most of the visitors to Saudi Arabia came on religious pilgrimages, to visit the many sacred sites located in the country. Mecca in particular draws over three million pilgrims during the month of Dhu al-Hijjah in Hajj, and around two million during the month of Ramadan in Umrah, two Muslim festivities according to the Islamic calendar.
A swathe of new hotel projects in the pipeline points to a growing tourism industry, and the next few years are set to be busy for the wealthy Middle Eastern country.

Project Pipeline
Over the next few years, between 2018 and 2021 and beyond, a total of 144 new projects are slated to be built, most of them concentrated in the Saudi Arabian cities of Riyadh, Jeddah and Makkah, each of which will receive 40, 34 and 22 new hotels respectively. These 144 hotels will bring an additional 56,106 new guest rooms and suites to the Middle Eastern country, helping to greatly increase the accommodation offerings for potential tourists who plan on visiting.

Being that Saudi Arabia is a wealthy nation with some of the most luxurious properties in the world, it is perhaps no surprise that the new hotels will be high end properties. 85 projects will be of a first class standard, while the remaining 59 will be luxury hotels. This year will see an incredible 64 new hotels opening their doors to the public, while next year will bring an additional 44 properties to Saudi Arabia’s hotel roster. 15 hotels will open in 2020, and a further 21 projects are planned for 2021 and beyond. Most of the project are currently under construction, with building works happening on 63 projects right now. Planning and pre-planning stages are in progress for 41 and 9 hotels respectively, while 31 projects are in the pre-opening stages.
