A great summer for tourism in Brussels: the Flower Carpet and Tomorrowland weekends break all records.This year, hotel numbers were up in July and August, with an average rise of 6 per cent compared with last year (73% compared with 67% occupation rates in 2013). “Our promotional activities to place Brussels as a summer destination have seen fantastic results, and we are incredibly proud. More and more tourists have been visiting, especially at weekends, despite our rather Belgian climate. A family of four staying at a 4* Rome hotel for four nights must now pay €96 in local hotel tax; last week it would have been €48. The City of Rome originally introduced the tax (the ‘tassa di soggiorno’) four years ago. Today, 1st September, it has doubled it. Rome gave five weeks’ notice to a global visitor economy whose planning cycles are measured in years. Hotels have been sold at one price and now have to charge another. This is an imposition on a completed transaction.

Malaysia Airlines Welcomes Publication of “Rebuilding a National Icon: The MAS Recovery Plan”.The Board of Malaysia Airlines welcomed the release by Khazanah Nasional Berhad (“Khazanah”), its majority shareholder, of “Rebuilding a National Icon: The MAS Recovery Plan” – a plan to facilitate the airline’s achievement of sustained profitability and competitiveness. It also acknowledged receipt of a letter from Khazanah relating to Khazanah’s planned investment in MAS to facilitate its delisting from the main market of Bursa Malaysia and restructuring, and the terms of such funding.

Thailand’s independently-launched insurance coverage policy for visitors has received 219 applicants from 44 countries in the first month after its formal launch, with a total premium value of 493,100 Baht. The largest number of applicants received in the period 24 July – 21 August, 2014 are from Italy (72), followed by Australia (18) and Canada (16).
