EVA to Offer Inflight Mobile, WiFi Services in 2014.Latest communications, entertainment systems on new aircraft
Taiwan’s Civil Aeronautics Administration has approved EVA Air’s request to provide inflight mobile and WiFi communications aboard brand-new Boeing 777-300ERs. The carrier will begin to take delivery of the new aircraft and make the communication services available to passengers in 2014. EVA is the first airline in Taiwan to secure approval for its passengers to make mobile phone calls and use WiFi inflight.
EVA ordered a total of seven Boeing 777-300ERs in May 2012. The airline will equip them with the latest Panasonic eX3 inflight entertainment system and a GCS (Global Communications Suite), and will be the first in the aviation industry to combine both technologies on Boeing 777-300ERs during the assembly process. EVA’s GCS will operate on an independent frequency that has been approved by Taiwan’s National Communications Commission and will not interfere with flight navigation communication or jeopardize flight safety. The GCS service will enable passengers to make mobile phone calls, browse the internet and use their own personal, WiFi-enabled mobile phones, tablets or laptops to read and send email from the comfort of their own seats.
The Panasonic eX3 is a new and upgraded inflight entertainment system that provides a more user-friendly and visually inviting environment, complete with a high-definition screen for watching movies and feature programming. The airline will make it available to passengers in all three of the cabins it is configuring on the new Boeing 777-300ERs, Economy, Elite and Royal Laurel Classes. The Android-based eX3 system will give passengers a wide range of options. They will even be able to browse an online library and check connecting-flight status and baggage-claim locations.
EVA is further enhancing inflight entertainment experiences such as watching movies and playing video games by upgrading systems in its Royal Laurel Class business cabin with eX3 16-inch touch screens and 4.1-inch LCD touch-screen remote controls. At the same time, it is equipping Elite and Economy classes with expanded eX3 11.1-inch monitors.
EVA became the first airline in Taiwan to provide in-seat audio video on demand (AVOD) entertainment when it introduced the systems in 2003.
